Present

In January 2011, the college/museum collection exceeded 1,000 works of contemporary art. Present highlights a small selection of recent acquisitions.

Artists included:

American artist Bart Exposito was born in 1970 in Amarillo, Texas, and now lives and works in Los Angeles. He earned an MFA in 2000 from the California Institute of the Arts and received a BFA in 1998 from the University of Texas, Austin.

American artist James Benjamin Franklin was born in 1972 and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received a BFA in 1999 from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California, attended New York Studio School of Painting and Sculpture in 1995, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine, in 1994.

American artist Archie Scott Gobber was born in 1965 in Warrensburg, Missouri, and now lives and works in Kansas City. He earned a BFA in 1988 from the Kansas City Art Institute.

American artist Jim Leedy was born in 1930 in McRoberts, Kentucky, and now lives and works in Kansas City and Lake Lotawana, Missouri. He received a BFA from R.P.I. of William and Mary, earned an MA in art history from Michigan State University, received an MFA from Southern Illinois University and studied at the postgraduate level at Columbia University and Ohio State University.

American artist Grant Miller was born in 1976 and lives and works in Kansas City. He earned an MFA in 2003 from Washington University in St. Louis and studied printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute.

American artist Angel Otero was born in 1981 in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and now lives and works in New York. He studied at the Universidad de Puerto Rico from 1999-2004 and earned an MFA in 2009 and a BFA in 2007 from the Art Institute of Chicago.

American artist Peter Saul was born in 1934 in San Francisco and now lives and works in New York. He attended the California School of Fine Arts from 1950-52 and attended Washington University in St. Louis from 1952-56.

American artist Mickalene Thomas was born in 1971 in New Jersey and now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. In 2002 she earned an MFA from Yale University and in 2000 received a BFA from Pratt Institute, Boston.  

American artist Dana Schutz was born in 1976 in Livonia, Michigan, and now lives and works in New York. She received an MFA from Columbia, earned a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and also studied at the Norwich School of Art and Design in England.

Canadian artist Winnie Truong was born in 1988 and lives and works in Toronto. In 2010 she graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design.

American artist Mary Wessel was born in 1952 and lives and works in Kansas City. Wessel is on the JCCC faculty and teaches Fundamentals of Photography. She earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992, received an MA in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1976 and received a BA in philosophy and sociology from Rutgers University, Douglass College, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1974.

American artist Andrzej Zielinski was born in 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri, and lives and works in Lawrence, Kansas. He attended JCCC in 1999, received a BFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002 and received an MFA in painting from Yale University in 2004.
