Recent Acquisitions for the Nerman Museum


The second of two acquisition exhibitions prior to the Nerman’s October 2007 opening, this show highlights sculpture, paintings, photographs, and works on paper by 17 artists.  Many of the works on view were acquired with funds from Marti and Tony Oppenheimer and the Oppenheimer Brothers Foundation. 

Artists included:

Born in Pakistan in 1962, Huma Bhabha received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1985 and MFA from Columbia University in 1989.

Karin Davie earned a BFA in 1987 from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and an MFA in 1989 from Rhode Island School of Design.

Lynn Davis was born in 1944 in Minneapolis and now lives and works in New York. She studied at the University of Minnesota and the University of Colorado, and received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1970.

Tomory Dodge was born in Denver in 1974, and he graduated in 2004 with an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. In 1998 he earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, and in 1997 he participated in the European Honors Program through RISD in Rome, Italy.

Carroll Dunham was born in 1945 in Connecticut. He earned a BA from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1971.

Brian Fahlstrom was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1978. He earned his BFA in 2000 from the Kansas City Art Institute, and received an MFA in 2003 from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

Lester Goldman was born in 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died in 2005. Goldman earned a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1964, and an MFA from Indiana University in 1966. He was based in Kansas City and taught at the Kansas City Art Institute.

An American Indian artist from the Ho-Chunk community, Tom Jones was born in 1964 and grew up in Florida. In 2005, he graduated with an MFA and MA in Museum Studies from Columbia College, Chicago; and in 1988, he earned a BFA from the University of Wisconsin.

Brad Kahlhamer was born in Tucson in 1956 and earned a BFA in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He is now based in New York.

Portia Munson was born in 1961 in Maine. She earned a BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, and in 1990, she received an MFA from the Mason Gross School of Art, Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1967, Jon Rappleye earned an Associate degree from Snow College, Ephraim, Utah, and a BFA from Utah State University in 1992. He received an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Eric Sall was born in 1977 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1999 he graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute, and an MFA in 2006 from Virginia Commonwealth University. He lives and works in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Dana Schutz was born in Michigan in 1976. She received an MFA from Columbia University in 2002 and a BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art in 2000. 

Amy Sillman was born in 1955 in Detroit. Sillman earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1979, and in 1995, she received her MFA from Bard College.

Born in New Jersey in 1971, Mickalene Thomas received a BFA from Pratt Institute, New York, in 2000 and an MFA from Yale University in 2002.

Dutch artist Ruud van Empel was born in 1958 in Breda, Netherlands, and lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied graphic design at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts, Breda, from 1976-1981.

Andrzej Zielinski was born in 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended JCCC in 1999, and in 2002, he received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2004 he completed his MFA at Yale University.
