Recent Acquisitions for the Nerman Museum


New View in the Johnson County Community College Gallery of Art will unveil 22 new works of art destined for the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.  This “sneak peak” will allow visitors a glimpse of recent acquisitions for the college’s pending museum, as well as set the stage for future announcements. Many of the works on view were acquired with funds from Marti and Tony Oppenheimer and the Oppenheimer Brothers Foundation.  The first of two acquisition exhibitions prior to the Nerman’s 2007 opening, this show highlights paintings, photographs, and works on paper with an underlying figurative theme. 

Artist James Brinsfield was born in 1949 in Chicago; he lives and works in Kansas City and teaches at the Kansas City Art Institute. Brinsfield earned a BFA from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1974, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1976.

Amy Cutler was born in 1974 in Poughkeepsie, New York. She received her BFA in 1997 from the Cooper Union School of Art, New York, and then studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

Karin Davie earned a BFA in 1987 from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, and an MFA in 1989 from Rhode Island School of Design.

French-American artist Jules de Balincourt was born in 1972 in Paris; he now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. In 2005, he earned an MFA from Hunter College, New York, and in 1998, he received a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco.

Born in Germany in 1958, Uta Barth received a BA from the University of California, Davis in 1982, and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1985.

Tomory Dodge was born in Denver in 1974, and he graduated in 2004 with an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. In 1998 he earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, and in 1997 he participated in the European Honors Program through RISD in Rome, Italy.

Brian Finke was born in Philadelphia in 1976 and now lives and works in New York, where he received a BFA in 1998 from School of Visual Arts.

Lester Goldman was born in 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died in 2005. Goldman earned a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1964, and an MFA from Indiana University in 1966. He was based in Kansas City and taught at the Kansas City Art Institute.

Erik Hanson was born in 1959 and lives and works in New York.

Brad Kahlhamer was born in Tucson in 1956 and earned a BFA in 1982 from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He is now based in New York.

Min Kim was born in 1975 in Seoul, South Korea. She earned a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, in 1997.

Originally from Chicago, Laura London attended the California Institute of the Arts, where she earned an MFA in 1986; she received her BFA in 1980 from the University of Arizona.

Warren Rosser was born in 1942 in Wales, UK; he earned his NDD in 1965 from the Cardiff College of Art in Wales, and received his ATC in 1967 from Goldsmiths College at the University of London. He lives and works in Kansas City where he teaches at the Kansas City Art Institute.

Eric Sall was born in 1977 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1999 he graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute, and he received an MFA in 2006 from Virginia Commonwealth University. He lives and works in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Dana Schutz was born in Michigan in 1976.  She received an MFA from Columbia University in 2002 and a BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art in 2000.

Amy Sillman was born in 1955 in Detroit. Sillman earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1979, and in 1995, she received her MFA from Bard College.

John Torreano was born in Flint, Michigan, in 1941. He currently lives and works in New York, where he heads the NYU graduate program in studio art. In 1967 he received an MFA from Ohio State University, Columbus. He earned a BFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI, in 1963, and in 1961 he graduated with an AA from Flint Community Junior College, Michigan.

Thomas Trosch studied at Rhode Island School of Design and the New York Studio School. He is now based in New York.

Kehinde Wiley was born in 1977 and raised in Los Angeles; his studio is currently based in New York. He received a BFA in 1999 from the San Francisco Art Institute. After he earned an MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2001, he was a resident artist at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Born in 1954 in Chicago, Sue Williams received her BFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, in 1976.

Born in San Francisco, California, Aaron Young currently lives and works in New York. In 2004 he earned an MFA from Yale University, and in 2001 he received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.
